A Rohingya couple with their two children were detained from Sylhet-Tamabil Highway in Asampara area of Jaintapur upazila in Sylhet on Tuesday night.
The detainees are Shariat Ullah, 34, his wife Taslima Bibi, 22, their two daughters Sharifa Akhtar, 3, and Shamima Akhtar, 2.
According to locals, the husband and the wife with their children were roaming around the area on Tuesday night.
Their activities and language raised suspicion among locals. Later they informed the Sripur BGB camp about the Rohingya couple. Later, law enforcers recovered Rohingya ID cards from the couple and took them along along with their children into custody.
The detainees admitted that they were Rohingya citizens of Myanmar.
Golam Dastgir Ahmad, officer-in-charge of Jaintapur Model police station, said the BGB members handed over the detainees to police after verifying their identity.
“We will send them back to the Rohingya camps following due legal processes,” he added.
Bangladesh is now hosting over 1.1 million Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar and Bhasan Char and not a single person was repatriated over the last five years.
