Underpass-Iulup will be constructed on Dhaka-Chittagong highway

A project worth Tk 57 crore is being taken up again to make the Dhaka-Chittagong highway safe and traffic free. Under the project, new underpasses will be constructed on such highways.

The initiative is aimed at reducing the risk of accidents and providing sustainable, safe and cost-effective communication systems.
It has been learned that underpasses will be constructed at the intersection of three roads at Paduar Bazar in Comilla on the 93rd kilometer of the highway, including underpasses at the entrances of Yulup and Comilla Sadar Dakshin Upazila and Comilla University.

The total cost of the project titled ‘Construction of 6 underpasses on Dhaka-Chittagong National Highway and Iulup at Paduar Bazar intersection’ has been estimated at Tk 57.93 crore. From now on, the project will be implemented by the Department of Roads and Highways (RHD) in the period of June 2024.

The project is being prepared for presentation by the Planning Commission’s Physical Infrastructure Division at the Executive Committee (ECNEC) meeting of the National Economic Council to be held at the NEC Conference Room in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on Wednesday (July 27th).

Planning Commission Planning Commission Member of the Physical Infrastructure (Secretary) said. Mamun Al-Rashid told banglanews that under the proposed project, Iulup and an underpass at Paduar Bazar intersection of Dhaka-Chittagong National Highway (N-1) and Comilla-Chandpur Regional Highway, two adjoining places at Comilla Sadar Dakshin Upazila Gate and Beltali Gate at Comilla University. Will be built. As a result of the implementation of the project, the Dhaka-Chittagong highway will be risk free.

Besides, congestion on the road will be reduced. The Dhaka-Chittagong link road will be used in the future for communication with the northeastern states of India. And that’s why it needs enough capacity and mobility to meet current and future traffic needs. ’

Under the project, 2,142 meters of Iulup construction approach road. Land acquisition including construction of three 181-meter underpasses, a double cabin pickup, landscaping under the project, utility seating and other works including tree planting will be completed.

The main objective of the project is to ensure sustainable, safe and cost-effective communication system on the Dhaka-Chittagong National Highway by reducing the risk of accidents.

The Dhaka-Chittagong National Highway (N-1) and the Comilla-Chandpur Regional Highway (R-140) have merged to form the four-lane road at Paduar Bazar. At this junction, a large number of vehicles going to Dhaka-Chandpur, Chittagong-Comilla, Comilla-Chandpur and Chandpur-Chittagong have to make a U-turn within 500 meters. As a result, severe traffic jams occur at this place most of the time, uninterrupted communication is severely disrupted and horrific accidents occur. Besides, road safety has also become essential at Comilla Sadar Dakshin Upazila Gate and Beltali Gate of Comilla University. The project is being taken considering these reasons.
